Problem Background For this terms project, imagine your team has been asked by the Chair of the Board of Trustees at Santiago Memorial Hospital to propose a solution to a problem with their gift shop. This is a completely fictional business, but the scenario is loosely based on a real situation.The members of the Board of Trustees include the CEO of the hospital, the publisher of the citys newspaper, the president of the local college, the owner of a local car dealership, the plant manager at a major employer in the community, a retired social worker, and three other physicians who practice at the hospital.Santiago Memorial Hospital is a $100-$bed non$-$profit hospital that has served a western US city of $45,000$ people and surrounding rural areas for over a century. The hospitals Mission Statement is to Make its Community Healthier. Its Vision is to create a place where people choose to come for healthcare, employees want to work, and physicians want to practice. The Core Values are honesty, legal and ethical compliance, inclusion, compassion, integrity, and trustworthiness.Santiago Memorial is the only hospital in its city and the largest hospital within a $200-$mile radius. It provides a wide range of specialty services including maternity services, cancer care, joint replacement, spinal surgery, diagnostic imaging, neuro and interventional radiology, and a level III trauma center. The hospital also has a helicopter pad to facilitate patient transport to larger hospitals in the region.As a non$-$profit, Santiago Memorial Hospital relies on community support and engagement to determine the needs of the community and help fund new programs. The hospitals gift shop was a source of $$75,000$ to $$100,000$ in funding annually that was used for these purposes. Since reopening after the COVID$-19$ pandemic, the gift shop has not returned to its previous level of success.Visiting hours at the hospital are $8$am$8$pm daily. Historically, the gift shop was open $9$am$7$pm on weekdays and $10$am$2$pm on weekends. One permanent employee is allocated half$-$time to the gift shop to oversee the volunteers and coordinate inventory orders. Volunteers perform all other duties: staffing the store, receiving new inventory into the system, stock rotation, merchandising, delivering phone$-$ordered items to patient rooms, etc. Since reopening about $18$ months ago, the gift shops hours have been $10$am$3$pm MondayThursday. It has been difficult to get enough volunteers to staff additional hours.Space is at a premium at Santiago Memorial Hospital. The gift shop space might be more profitable as clinical space. Yet, there are potentially intangible benefits from the gift shop. Hospital employees and visitors place some value on the retail therapy grabbing a quick snack, being able to pick up a card or gift for a patient, or simply a diversion from the stress of a difficult situation. The gift shop is open to the public $($not just hospital visitors$)$ and there are no similar stores near the hospital. At the citys mall, the Hallmark store closed several years ago. The JCPenney and Macys stores there also closed recently. The city has a Walmart, a Dollar General, and two Walgreens that do compete on items like greeting cards. There is no other gift shop in the city that directly competes with the gift shop at the hospital.The CEO of the Board of Trustees has asked your team, What should we do with the gift shop?This is a broad problem, and your team will need to refine the problem to a narrower scope as you work through the problem$-$solving process.Obviously, your team will not be able to directly research this hospital since it is fictional. You may find it useful to research similar situations through the BTAS online library resources. For example, this is a recent article discussing general changes in volunteerism.A decline in volunteers worries non$-$profits $($Fortune$)$ Your firsthand experiences may also be valuable as you work through this process. I have also set up an optional discussion board where your team can ask questions of a fictional liaison to the Board of Trustees. There is no right or wrong answer to this scenario I am looking for your team to follow the problem$-$solving process, make a recommendation and sell it to the Board of Trustees.
