Problem Statement
Figure below shows a stepped shaft supported by two 6300-series bearings with equal and opposite
gear loads. The load on each gear consists of a radial component and a tangential component. It is
specified that the gear loads are 90 degrees out of phase and the radial component on each gear is
0.466 times the tangential component.
For the data in the row(s) assigned from Table 1 below, select suitable ball bearings (from attached SKF
catalogue) for a maximum of 10% failure rate, desired life of 80106 revolutions, and under the
following conditions:
I. no axial force acting on the shaft.
II. an axial force of Fa=800lbf act on the shaft through gear 1.
Selection Criteria: Bearings must:
Smallest bore diameter
Meets load-rating requirement
Needed Specifications: Bearing number, bore, OD, width (all in mm), and basic dynamic load rating.

Determine the bearing reactions in the x direction by considering the gear loads in the x-z plane
Determine the bearing reactions in the y direction by considering the gear loads in the y-z plane.
Calculate the magnitude of the total load at bearing 1.
