Earthquakes are categorized based on the moment magnitude scale (similar to the Richter magnitude scale) and the Mercalli intensity scale. The moment magnitude scale quantifies the energy released by an earthquake, and the Mercalli intensity scale measures the effects of an earthquake on a scale from I - XII. In many cases, there is a correlation between the magnitude and the intensity of an earthquake. The following table shows the probable Mercalli intensity for various moment magnitudes:
