A relatively young, privately held consulting company (less than 10 years old), Armadillo Research, Inc. had a turnover issue. Known for hiring senior level employees who were experts in their field, Armadillo did not bother with training programs, tuition reimbursement, and so forth. Once hired into a position, regardless of age, individuals stayed in that area until you hit the top level of that career ladder - and, it was anticipated that you would stay there, be happy there until retirement. Because of the turnover (and rapid growth of the organization) Armadillo has been forced into hiring individuals with less training than prior employees might have had.
Armadillo's organizational structure is set up as "gangs of five." That is, individuals are assigned to a client team with an Account Executive, Project Manager, Field Representative, Data tabber, and an analyst. Individuals did not move teams unless the client stops working with the organization.
The CEO is concerned about what the increased turnover, and dissatisfaction is doing to his organization. He wants to address the issue by creating a new level in the organization and throwing more money at his most senior people - and has the support of at least one other company owner (another male). However, others are not sure that will assist with the problem. He finally agreed to have a consultant come into the organization and to offer a solution.
