Project Problem-Braced Frame for Building
Submit this in the "Project" dropbox
In the "project" folder on Blackboard, there are drawings that show the layout of the building we
will be using as a project throughout the semester. The project building has 3 braced frames.
We will design braced frames BF-1 and BF-2. These frames are identical and provide lateral
force resistance for wind directed towards the front or back wall. The ultimate wind loads are
shown on the diagram below. Design the lightest double angles for the x -brace at each story.
The x-braces are to be designed as "tension only". The braces are to be designed with a 38 "gap
for a 38'' gusset plate. Determine the best orientation of the angles (LLBB or SLBB). Provide
recommendations for filler plate spacing. For checking story drift, use a service load level equal
to 70% of the ultimate wind loads. The drift limit for each story is H/500.
