I. PROJECT BRIEF
The Pongola River is situated in the Kwazulu-Natal (Northern part) of the Republic of
South Africa. The well-known hydraulic structure built on the river is the Pongolapoort
Dam. The river flows downstream the dam and reaches the Mozambique border.
i) For water resources planning purpose in the catchment surrounding the dam,
you have been tasked to the carry out a one-dimensional hydraulic flood
modelling/simulation on a river reach (namely the Pongola River reach 1)
starting from cross section 1 as presented in Figure 1. In this figure, points A
and B are left and right bank stations of the main channel. Cross section 1 is
the lower section (i.e. the most downstream point in the reach considered). The
incremental distances along the reach (from cross section 1) are given in Table
For the cross sections presented in this table, the corresponding points to A
and B will be used respectively for left and right bank stations of the main
channel. Consecutive cross-sections in the reach are 250 m apart. The
contraction and expansion coefficients are 0.1 and 0.3 respectively. A 2000
m3s flow is considered for sub-critical conditions (starting from upper cross
section, i.e. the most upstream section).(30 marks)
