Topic: Recovery & Renewal: The Path to Sustainable Development

On March 6, 2023, at our annual Current Trends & Issues Seminar. Our 2^nd speaker Dr. Andre Haughton presented on Recovery & Renewal: The Path to Sustainable Development. Dr. Andre Haughton, Started his presentation by elaborating on poor leadership and antagonism in Jamaica also corruption that leads to the downfall of many sustainable paths that should have already been developed as we do have the resources.

He presented that we do not need money to make money which would need a lot of explanation because it is very important to have financial capital as a country or business for that sought. He argued that the government should create jobs and that citizens should reject bribes because this kind of compromise leads to a substandard lifestyle. He suggested that we should make better use of the bauxite industry as it is one of the sources of renewal and sustainability

Dr. Andre Haughton spoke about the use of the black chain for the fishing industry, which is a current trend in the business world presently as the black chain is applicable to any area of business in this present time and age. Dr. Andre Haughton also spoke about Artificial Intelligence and how it is taking over many of our industries. He asserted that the government should make connections with Mr. Elon Musk to secure jobs for university students when his company is going to make robots.

Dr. Haughton also presented on the cannabis industry and outlined that the Jamaican economy could recover from most of the damages caused by incompetent leaders by utilizing the cannabis production of Jamaica. He claimed that cannabis has a market value of $ 11.1 billion USD per annum which is 75% of Jamaicas GDP. Dr. Haughton implied that Jamaica has 125+ different cannabis strains. Cannabis is a current business opportunity in Jamaica and is mostly controlled by one group of people who makes a lot of money from it, this product has a lot of beneficial resources that are in demand by the medical society which is said to have properties that can be used to treat cancer and other medical problems.

The presenter also emphasizes that we cannot change people from being monopolies but that the authorities should change focus and rather invest in human capital. I do believe this would be a good idea although we can weigh the cost as many brilliant ideas that sounded good have failed after being implemented.

Dr. Haughton also discussed the COVID-19 effects of selected economic indicators where he gave statistics on productivity, employment, and inflation which he claimed stood at 10%. He also spoke about the banks increasing their interest rate which is a current issue in the business world presently.
