Electronic health records (EHR) have significantly improved data collection in the healthcare industry. They provide updated information to clinicians, keep payers up to date on billing encounters, and provide insurance companies with the ability to track and measure different components of process, outcomes, and cost of care (Nash et al., 2019).

EHR's facilitates the sharing of patient data to different healthcare systems and providers, which allows for better coordination of care, especially for patients who seek care from multiple healthcare providers or facilities. Authorized members of the patient's multidisciplinary team can access patient information in real time, which allows for better coordination, continuity of care, and ensures that healthcare providers have access to comprehensive information about their patients. HealthIT.gov reports that 75 percent of healthcare providers say their EHR enables them to deliver better patient care, which results in higher patient satisfaction rates and fewer medication errors, among other benefits (Steger, 2019). It also facilitates communication and a relationship between primary care physicians and their multidisciplinary team members (Manca, 2015). This ability to share care improves the accuracy and efficiency of data collection and reduces the reliance on manual data. It also prevents the faxing of data which may cause a delay in a patient's care.

EHR's allows for the collection of structured, organized, and standardized data. This format enables healthcare providers to capture a wide range of patient information which includes their medical history, allergies, medications, laboratory results and imaging reports. This comprehensive set of data provide the complete picture of a patient's health and helps physicians to spend less time searching for reports (Manca, 2015).

EHRs usually contain decision support tools such as alerts, reminders, and clinical guidelines. These tools assist the healthcare provider in making informed decisions as they provide evidence-based recommendations and highlight potential issues or interactions. It provides access to information and resources that point primary care providers toward the best approach to the various conditions they encounter in practice (Manca, 2015). With improved access to laboratory data there is a reduction in duplication and costs. Disease outcomes can be improved, as shown by a randomized clinical trial of 21 practices that demonstrated a reduction in blood pressure in patients with hypertension who received screening for and advice on high-risk drinking, alcohol abuse, or alcohol dependence through an EMR intervention (Rose et al., 2008). It therefore contributes to more accurate and standardized data collection which improves the quality and consistency of healthcare data.

Lastly, EHRs offer opportunities for research and population management by aggregating anonymized patient data. Researchers can then use this data to conduct studies, analyze trends and identify patterns in large populations. EHRs contributes to the advancement of medical knowledge and evidence-based practices, leading to better data collection and healthcare outcomes on a broader scale.

While EHRs have greatly improved data collection, there remains the challenges of ensuring data privacy and security, and data errors. However overall it has made a positive impact on data collection and has enabled more efficient and comprehensive healthcare delivery (Manca, 2015).
