Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to practice creating one of the critical and important documents in project management, the project charter. The success of your project depends on the clarity and accuracy of your business case and whether people believe they can achieve it. The purpose of a project charter is to provide an understanding of the project, the reason it is being conducted, and its justification; establish the general scope of the project; and establish the project manager and his or her authority level.
For this assignment, you will construct a project charter for the project at Global Green Books: producing custom books for a local university. Just as it would be in a real life project, initially you do not have all the information to fully complete every detail. The project charter is meant to establish preliminary project baselines, general time and budget estimates, and project scope and expectations. The project charter includes some best guesses because not all of the information is available yet. The information from the charter will be refined as the planning process is implemented and more information becomes available.

Step 1: Review the sample project charter in chapter 7 of Project Management (Project Initiation) Links to an external site. as a guide. The example, Rice University Computer Store Creation, will give you an idea of the level of detail needed for a project charter.
Step 2: Download and rename the project charter template Download project charter templateto fill out the required sections of the project charter for the project at Global Green Books: producing custom e-books for a local university.
Step 3: Replace the yellow highlighted text in the template with details specific to the Global Green Books. To complete the project charter, use the information from the case studies (pay close attention to the first 2 case studies) and from the document, "Global Green Books Project Additional Information," which is in the week two learning materials.
Step 4: Submit your completed project charter document
Remember that you do not have all the information to complete the charter with every detail you might want to include. This would be true in a real life project. The project charter includes some best guesses because not all of the information is available yet. The information from the charter will be refined as the planning process is implemented and more information becomes available. For example, the project charter contains a scope section (which will be covered in more detail in the upcoming module for planning process.) Thus, the scope that you write for the project charter is a best guess that will be revised and become more detailed as you go through the planning process and write a Project Management Plan.
