Purpose: This multi-step research project will help strengthen your communication and critical thinking skills. The assignments in this project will require you to demonstrate your ability to determine a topic, analyze text, synthesize source information, and present your new knowledge. the project will be developed through one of the following approaches: textual analysis, social or historical analysis, or biographical analysis. As you engage with each of the primary sources in this module, think about the direction that your project might take. Textual analysis requires a close reading of the text that focuses on how the text conveys meaning through language and the elements that make up the text. If you are interested in writing a textual analysis, consider the following questions: Who is narrating or telling what happens in the work? How is the narrator, speaker, or character revealed to readers? How do we come to know and understand this figure? Does the work have characters? If so, who are the major and minor characters, what do they represent, and how do they relate to one another? What kind of language does the author use to describe, narrate, explain, or otherwise create the world of this work? More specifically, what tone, images, or symbols appear in the work? What is their function? What meanings do they convey? What is the theme of the work? What is the author's purposewhat does the author want readers to think, believe, or as a consequence of reading the work? A social or historical approach to analysis focuses on investigating the context surrounding a text and how the text reflects the ideas and attitudes of the time in which it was written. If you are interested in writing a social or historical analysis, consider the following questions: What attitudes or assumptions about social or cultural forces (i.e. religion, gender, class, etc.) were prevalent during the time the work is set and when it was written? How might these have influenced the work? What economic, political, or historical events (i.e. war, laws, leadership, government policy, etc.) occurred during the time the work is set and when it was written? How might these have influenced the work? The biographical approach to analysis focuses on how the author's life, influences, and beliefs shape a text. If you are interested in writing a biographical analysis, consider the following questions: What connections can you make between your knowledge of an author's life and the behavior and motivation of characters in their work? What influencespersons, ideas, religious beliefs, movements, eventsevident in the author's life does the work reflect? How? What has the author revealed in the work about their characteristic modes of thought, perception, or emotion? What place does this work have in the writer's literary development and career? Is this work characteristic of the author's genre, subject matter, or style? Article on Graham Greene, "The Destructors" https://shortstoryproject.com/stories/the-destructors/
