While both leaders and managers are in positions of oversight, they differ in the aim of their focus. Leadership requires a shift in thought and is a skill built up over time (Forbes Coaches Council, 2017). Leadership focuses more on the people involved with the project than the project itself. Leaders seek challenges and aim to provide solutions for the benefit of the organization and/or the team long-term. Managers focus more on completing the project and overseeing the team or organization's performance and responsibilities. Managers operate within the present, dealing with training and tactics. "Both leadership and management involve influence" (Northouse, 2020). A manager can also be a leader by focusing on the development of their team, strengthening the skills of others beyond the task at hand, and creating opportunities for curiosity, growth, and improvement.
