Q2
a) A flat bar 12" wide by 38" thick, is to be used as a tension tie. The vertical edge distance from the center of the bolt holes is 2" and the center to center distance (horizontally and vertically) between adjacent bolt holes is 3". The bar is to be constructed from two lengths connected together with a lap splice using 8 no.34" bolts as shown in the figre below. Calculate the design tensile resistance of the bar assuming A36 plates are used.
b) The steel beam on line ' C ' on the structural plan illustrated in Q 1 is a W14x26, and is made from A992. Assuming the beam is simply supported and fully restrained against LTB, assess the adequacy of the critically loaded beam section.
NB: - checks should be performed for flexure, shear and deflection.
the self-weight of the beam should not be ignored.
NB: Comment on the results obtained from the design checks for parts (a) & (b).
