A flat bar $12"$ wide by $\frac{1}{4}"$ thick, is to be used as a tension tie. The vertical edge distance from the center of the bolt holes is $2"$ and the center to center distance $($horizontally and vertically$)$ between adjacent bolt holes is $3".$ The bar is to be constructed from two lengths connected together with a lap splice using $8$ no$.\frac{5}{8}"$ bolts as shown in the figre below.

a$)$ On separate diagrams, illustrate five $(5)$ possible fracture patterns that can be considered in the analysis of this structural assembly.

b$)$ Calculate the design tensile resistance of the bar assuming A$572$ Gr $50$ plates are used.

c$)$ Discuss qualitatively how the structural assembly would be affected if the A$572$ Gr $50$ plates were substituted for A$36$ plates.
