TDP $($Thermal Design Power$)$ is a rating given a CPU by its manufacturer to indicate how much heat the CPU's cooler should be able to handle in order to keep the CPU operating at peak efficiency. Some manufacturers calculate this number under normal usage, and some test for maximum required cooling. Either way, it's a number to pay attention to when selecting coolers and, indirectly, power supplies.
