Quality Performance Data

The Quality Manager reports the following information. The year to date performance with respect to percent defective is 5.1%. The performance, by Line, is Line 1 = 1.7%, Line 2 = 1.8% and Line 3 = 1.6%.

The performance by button type is Type A = 2.8%, Type B = 1.2% and Type C = 1.1%. Note that percent defective in this case is percent of the total production for that button type. For example, for Type A, the 2.8% represents 2.8% of 5 million or 140,000 defective buttons (0.028x5000000).

The type of defects that occur come in four different categories: Appearance, Shape, Function and Other.

Performance by category for each button type is as follows:

Appearance defects can take several forms, including poor base coat, paint skips, distorted face, scratches and smudges. Shape basically has two forms, out of round and warped. Function refers to stiffness or damaged safety pin and the other category is a catch all for anything else in the case of Button Type A above, the other problem was a rough edge on the buttons.
