For example (not using current environment, from 2005): Politically my airline was recovering from 9/11, we had to file bankruptcy and consider merging with another airline. We already took massive pay cuts and people lost their jobs, but this was the only way to save the airline. Economically people were not spending money and we were heading towards a recession The airline had to cut costs by eliminating pillows and blankets on domestic flights. Socially the "baby boomers" who had excess money were not spending it on airline tickets and we offered senior citizen discount fares. Technology was being used such as standard telephone conference calls along with video conferencing and the airline decided to use marketing to show the benefits of meeting someone in person could never compare to a video or phone call.
