Question 1: Considering language use in Japan since the 1970s, discuss the ways in which languages other than Japanese have impacted a) the Japanese language, b) Japanese speakers' use of other languages, c) Japanese speakers' attitudes towards their own and other languages, and/or d) Japan's linguistic landscape. The answer are encouraged to consider the uses and functions of Japanese (and other languages) across a range of contexts (including spoken and written language use) and any trends of change (or absence of change) with respect to the broader theme of "language in Japanese society" in this modern era.
Question 2: Japanese speakers have many social practices, linguistic strategies, and cultural values they share when interacting with other speakers of Japanese. Identify at least three of these practices, strategies, and/or values, and for each a) name it and explain what it is, b) explain how and when it might be evident (e.g., with whom, in what situation), and c) explain the effects and/or outcomes it creates for those engaged in the specific situation you have identified.
