Question 1
Engineers have a unique role to play in the Path Forward to a sustainable future. This is because they have a direct effect on the design and development of
products, processes, and systems; as well as on natural systems through material selection, project sitting, and the end-of-life management of chemicals,
materials, and products.
You are the project development manager for a high-tech property development company. Your company prides itself as being an environmentally conscious
company. Your company is the first to build 3D printed houses in a new residential area on the outskirts of town. Your current 3D printing machines use
concrete (cement (limestone & clay), water, sand and rocks) which has to be mixed on-site (resulting in dust/noise etc.). Furthermore, these machines use
hydraulic oil and water when they operate. You also have diesel generators to power these 3D printing machines. You have trucks coming and going
(generating dust) to the building site bring the raw materials for the 3D printing machine. On one corner of the site (muddy) you have a water tanker supplying
water for the concrete mix. The housing minister is set to visit your site and production to showcase its greenness.
You are to present the current environmental challenges and to apply the 12 Green Engineering principles to develop a better solution that articulates the
benefits and impacts of the solution over the lifetime of the property design process using these printers to the minister.
Marking rubric
Level of performance
(1)= Fail (<50%)(2)= Pass (50%-74%)(3)= Excellent (>75%)
The environmental challenge is not appropriate nor relevant
and not clearly described
Green engineering principles are not articulated to develop
sustainable solution to the environmental challenge at hand
Benefits and impacts of the solution over lifetime of the
design are not articulated
The environmental challenge is described but articulation
could be improved. The environmental challenge is
relevant.
Green engineering principles are articulated to a
satisfactory level to develop a sustainable solution
Benefits and impacts of the solution over lifetime of the
design are articulated but can be improved
The environmental challenge is clearly articulated, and it is
highly appropriate and relevant.
Green engineering principles are articulated in depth to
develop a sustainable solution
Benefits and impacts of the solution over lifetime
