WALKING AWAY FROM WAR
Twenty-four-year-old geographer Brandon Finn likes coffee, chilli, cities and running. In fact, he
loves running. He loves it so much that on January 12021, he will be tying his takkies for the start
of Expedition Imashi, a 10-day, 400km run from Johannesburg to Hattingspruit.
Apart from the sheer masochism, Brandon will be running alongside the train tracks and roads
between this city and this town for two other reasons. The first: to commemorate a lesser-known
event in South African history.
In 1899, at the start of the second South African war, 7000 people (made up of Zulu mine- workers
and their families) were unable to leave Johannesburg and return home because the trains had
been commandeered. Their only other option of getting home was by foot, and all 7000 made this
journey home safely.
There is a plaque in their honour, near the gates of the University of the Witswatersrand, which
reads: The epic march of Zulu workers. Walking away from war.
Imashi translates to march in Zulu, and the space between the English and Zulu plaques will
serve as Brandons starting point.
The second reason that Brandon has decided to run, is to raise both awareness and money for an
organisation he respects and admires. Having lived in Cape Town for five years, Brandon has seen
The Big Issue as a proactive and innovative way for unemployed, marginalised people to earn an
income, and gain greater socioeconomic mobility.
