1.
Read the following case study and answer the questions that follow: It was Mr. Nti’s first day at work after his appointment as the circuit inspector. He has decided to visit schools to acquire first-hand information on the prevailing conditions and organisational climate. As it was raining and the river that he was to cross was overflowing after torrid rains, he decided to leave his car under a tree. Rolling his pants up to avoid getting them wet and muddy, he walked across the river. Approaching the school entrance, Mr. Nti met a man who was ploughing the mealie fields, while the learners were all over the school ground playing. The man, whose pants were also rolled up against his legs, calmly stopped and pointed him in the direction of the principal’s office. Mr Nti proceeded through the school gates and met two ladies who looked like teachers sitting on chairs with two female learners plaiting their hair. When Mr Nti asked the teachers where the principal’s office was, the ladies first giggled and ask each other in English who this stranger was, then told him to proceed straight ahead. Mr. Nti arrived at the principal’s office door which was open and saw the principal sitting with the school governing Board chairman in front of a huge calabash of sorghum beer, presumably brought to the school by the latter. The principal immediately recognised who was at his door, before he could say anything, the school board chairman(who had never met him ) was offering him some beer. Mr. Nti declined, horrified, telling the school board chairman curtly that he was not in the habit of drinking alcohol; while on duty. Seeing the principal’s equally horrified expression, the school board chairman realised his mistake, but it was too late. Mr. Nti’s first words were: “I need to see every staff member of the school at once.” All staff members quickly gathered in the staff room, except for the deputy principal who could not be traced. At long last, he appeared with his pants rolled up his legs and barefooted. It appeared this was the same man who had been ploughing his field by the school gate…(Taken from “The Effective Management of Schools by RJ (Nico) Botha pg 37)
