Computing the median

The median is also an average, but of a very different kind. The median is defined as the midpoint in a set of scores. It is the point at which one half or 50% of the scores fall above and one half, or 50% fall below. Because there is no formula for computing the median, there will be a series of steps.

Computing the mode

The third and last measure is the mode, and it is the most general and least precise measure but it plays a very important part in understanding characteristics of a sample of scores. The ode is the value that occurs most frequently. Like the median there is no formula for computing the mode.

(2) Tally the number of times that each value (number) occurs

(3) The value (number) that occurs most often is the mode
