Question 3 (40 marks) ABC is a global project-based consulting company in the construction industry. Since its inception in the 1950s, the company has been very successful and now it has many offices worldwide and employs more than 10,000 professional staff. ABC company excels in its knowledge on design and construction of buildings and over the decades, lots of projects have been carried out. However, such knowledge (often in the form of staff's expertise and design documents) often remain at the local branch and not widely shared. In the age of globalization, ABC company's dominance and leadership in the industry has been gradually compromised. Directors of ABC company has decided to adopt enterprise knowledge management in order to resurrect its leadership in the market. Without any further investigation, the directors have issued the following statement to all staff regarding introduction of KM (which is very new to the company) - "Dear colleagues, our company offers knowledge-based services to our clients worldwide. As such, we shall introduce a Knowledge Management System (KMS) in 6 months time. This technical KMS will support your daily project activities; it will also help you to learn from past mistakes, find experts, and avoid re-inventing the wheel. You do not need any further information; you just need to use the system when it becomes operational." Now answer the following questions with reference to the above scenario: (a) List and explain FOUR mistakes committed by the ABC directors in their approach. (8 marks) (b) Identify and justify FOUR technical KM tools that can be embedded in the KMS. (8 marks) () Identify and justify FOUR soft KM techniques/methods that you would recommend ABC to adopt in order to enhance their knowledge-based services. (8 marks) (d) If you are employed by ABC company as a KM manager, given the directors' announcement, what are your strategies in order to enhance the chance of success of KM inside ABC. You may, if you like, present your strategies as a list of steps on a timeline. (16 marks)
