Question 39(USE AUSTRALIAN STANDARD- or Dont attempt the question)
(Total Marks for Question 3: 25)
A grade 300250 UC89.5 steel column has been designed to support a substantial
axial compression load in a large carpark structure. The column is located at the
end of a ramp so there is a possibility that the column could also be subjected to
substantial bending actions due to impact loads during the life of the structure,
therefore combined actions checks needs to be conducted.
Details of the ultimate design loadings are shown in Figure 3.
The following assumptions can be made:
The column can be assumed to be braced and pinned at the base and the top
of the column, about both axes.
No lateral restraints are available about any axis.
a) Conduct a combined actions section capacity check.
b) Conduct a combined actions in-plane member capacity check.
c) Conduct a combined actions out-of-plane member capacity check.
