Question 3
a) Write the filtration equation and briefly describe all the terms involved.
b) A filtration test was carried out on a sulfide concentrate (SG=4) of 40% solids (w/w) using a
batch test with a constant gauge pressure of 300kPa. The area of the filter was 0.1m2. The test
results yielded the filtration equation expressed in usual units (sm) :
t(VA)=59.6(VA)+20.8
Calculate the values of the following properties assuming the liquid used in the batch test in part (b)
is pure water:
i the specific resistance of the filter cake (r)
ii thickness of the filtration medium (L).0.348m
c) A plant scale filter using the same filter media is to be used to filter the same sulfide concentrate
as in (b) at 70% solids (w/w) and at a pressure differential of 250kPa. If the area of the plant
filter is 9.6m2 use the batch test equation to estimate the quantity of filtrate that would pass
through the filter in 1 hour. State any assumptions made in your calculation.
