Read the case study below and answer the questions that follow.
Motivation of employees
A part of the leading function of a manager is to improve performance and motivate
employees. A common misconception is that managers can play a major part in the motivation
of their employees. Nobody can motivate another person to perform better - motivation
comes from within. Motivation is defined as an inner desire to satisfy an unsatisfied need.
From the viewpoint of an organisation, motivation may be defined as the willingness of an
employee to achieve organisational goals.
Motivation drives people to behave in certain ways - what is right under the circumstances.
However, one tenet is that people do what is right for them. If employees' perception is that
their best interest is linked to the interest of the organisation, they will probably be motivated
to achieve the goals of the organisation. In this respect, managers can do much to create a
work environment in which the best interest of both the employees and the organisation
coincide.
