Consider the following emergency room (ER) health care process. Patients entering the ER visit the triage where a nurse categorizes the patient as urgent or non-urgent. Urgent patients directly proceed to the nurse room whereas non-urgent patients wait about two hours before they are sent to the nurse room. Nurse room is the first step for all ER patients after they leave the triage. ER nurse measures the body temperature and blood pressure of the patient, makes preliminary inspection to assess the current health condition of the patient, and records his/her findings in the patient file. Patient is then moved to the physician's office with the help of a nurse by a wheelchair or a hospital bed. Patients wait for about 10 minutes before they can see the physician. Physician reads the nurse's recordings and then examines the patient. If extra tests are required, patient is sent to the lab/radiology department on the second floor. If extra tests are not required, the physician treats the patient immediately after which the patient is either discharged or becomes an in-patient. At the lab/radiology department, patient is asked to fill in a form to provide his/her personal contact information. Patient is then moved back to the physician's office. Physician immediately takes care of such patients and provides the necessary treatment by checking the lab/radiology results after which the patient is either discharged or becomes an in-patient. • Draw a process map. Identify three value-added and three waste activities in the process map. Consider the following emergency room (ER) health care process.
