"Family" restaurant with an unethical hiring/training process that left certain employees who were not friends with the family untrained and unhappy until they eventually quit, because they had no real reason to fire them. -Justice Concerns and Conflicting Interests -Favoritism, Nepotism, Cronyism (in the hiring process, scheduling, training process) -Some concerns about lawfulness (were concerned about unlawfully firing them, so did everything they can to get them to quit) -Altering the job description/exploitation? (putting people who have less of a voice in roles they did not apply for) -Treating people as mere means (Hiring people with the intention of merely filling a role they do not even want until friends return) In July of 2021, I was given a job in a newly opened family owned restaurant as a server. Majority of the employees from the time of opening were close friends of the family's daughter, particularly the waiters and waitresses. All was going well until September came and all these young employees headed back to school, most of which were out of town. Some servers left, hostesses left, and food runners left, but most had to reduce their number of shifts to accommodate their education. This required the restaurant to hire people in multiple positions that the family did not necessarily have a relationship with. Many people applied for positions, and few were accepted, however none of them were treated with the same respect as the friends were. It was very obvious that the temporary employees that took time off for school were still a priority, and that these new employees would be sacrificed if anyone chose to return to the restaurant. Many people were hired for the position of a server, but would be given shifts doing other things that made substantially less money. Many people were not provided the required training, and then were lashed out on if they made mistakes, or demoted because they were not deemed good enough for the other role. When employees requested proper or more training, management did not want to grant it to them. When they figured out an employee was not already trained enough for the position, they would schedule them much less, and in lesser roles like hostess or food runner because there was no lawful reason to fire them. These are not the positions they were hired for, so frustrations began. They would continue to treat these employees disrespectfully until their frustrations pushed to the point where they quit. This way the restaurant did not commit an unlawful firing, rather the employee left on their own accord. To summarize, the employees that had no prior relationship to the family were not given a fair opportunity compared to others that were, in all aspects of the job. They were mistreated, untrained, and pushed away from their jobs until they were forced to quit.
