Question No.4:
A secondary school is located in an open area in Dubai. The building is made of reinforced
concrete. The lateral-load-resisting system in the N-S direction comprises of a number of special
RC moment resisting frames and shear walls (dual syatem), while the lateral loads are resisted in
the E-W direction by special RC moment resisting frames, as shown in Figure 4. The following
information about the building is available:
- The building consists of a ground story and five typical stories
- The story height is 4.2 m except for the ground story, which is 5.8 m high.
- Total permanent load (self weight and superimposed load) can be assumed equal to 9.5 kN/m2
Live load is 3.0 kN/m2 for all stories except for the roof which has a live load of 1.5 kN/m2.
- A water tank, which has a total weight of 1900 kN, is installed on the roof
- Soil type: Stiff soil
- Material Properties: Concrete: f =40 MPa, Reinforcement: fy =420 MPa
The following are required for questions 1 to 10:
i. Use the ASCE 7 Equivalent Lateral Force Procedure to determine the following:
a. Total seismic base shear, V, of the building.
b. The distribution of seismic forces along the height of the building.
c. The distribution of story shear along the height of the building.
d. Maximum overturning moment at foundation.
iii. Use the ASCE 7 Analytical Procedure to determine the following:
a. Maximum wind forces and their distribution on the building.
b. Total base shear, V, due to wind.
c. Maximum overturning moment due to wind at foundation.
(Calculate the wind forces from external pressure only, and assume that the building is enclosed)
iv. Select the maximum base shear and overturning moment that govern the design from
earthquake and wind loads. Figure 4
