A solid machine shatl nunning at 400rmin is supported on two bearings 400 mm apart. 30 kW is tranmittad to the shalt through a 400 mm diameter pulley located 200 mm to the right of the right-hand bearing centre.
The power is transmitted from the shaft through a 150 mm diameter pinion located 200 mm to the right of the left-hand bearing centre. The belt drive is at an angle of 30 above the horizontal. The mass of the pulley is 40 kg and the ratio of belt tension is 3:1. The pinion gear has a pressure angle of 20 and meshes with another gear located directly above it.
The shatl material has an ultimate shear strength of 450 MPa .
Design a suitable shaft diameter for the drive by using the guest formula (see Figure 1). NOTE: the pinion rotates anti-clockwise.
The shaft is subjected to shock and fatigue factors of KD=1,5 and Kt=2.
