In this experiment both R2 and R3 will be variable resistors, but only one needs to be. The galvanometer G is a sensitive, low internal resistance device for measuring small currents. In order to use the Wheatstone bridge, we adjust the variable resistors until the current through the galvanometer is zero. In such a case using Kirchhoff's rules, we can show that the unknown resistance can be expressed in terms of the three known resistances by the formula R3 R = R1. R2 1.
