READ & ANNOTATE 1: Open-Ended Conversations: Moving Beyond "Pro" and "Con" and into Inquiry

To become a responsible researcher, it is important to be aware that no resource exists on its own. All sources that you collect are in relationship to other sources; they "talk" to each other and create a conversation that, as a researcher, you try to understand. This reading provides you with an introduction to how sources talk with each other and how that conversation can help you understand your topic of research in a sophisticated way.

Purpose

The purpose of this reading is to understand how sources are always in conversation with each other.

What You Will Submit

You will post at leastfiveannotationsto the reading using the Canvas Student Annotation Tool. Annotations are responses to parts of a text that express your thoughts as you read it. Annotations can include responses where you

• Make connections
  • Text to self: How can you connect to the text yourself? Your experiences, memories, life?
  • Text to text: How can you connect the text to other texts you have read, seen, watched, heard?
  • Text to world: How can you connect the text to the world outside of our class and what we are learning?
• Disagree with something the author is saying
• Ask questions about the article
• Clarify ideas, topics, words, etc.
• Reply to other annotations by doing more than simply agreeing
• Do anything else that shows you interacting with the text.
