Participation is important to make sure that government addresses the real needs of communities in the most appropriate way. Participation also helps to build an informed and responsible citizenry with a sense of ownership of government developments and projects. It allows municipalities to get buy$-$in and to develop partnerships with stakeholders. In each municipality, a number of people, structures and mechanisms can play a role in public participation.
