Headquartered in Denmark, the ISS group specialises in cleaning services.
It employs around 216,700 employees spread across some 120 companies and
34 countries. The group is organised around four major regional divisions:
Asia/Pacific, Northern Europe, Western Europe and Southern and Eastern
Europe. Poul Andreassen, who was the key architect of this organisational
design, thought that the 'most profitable way to provide services is through
small stand-alone companies led by a local manager who is encouraged to
think of the business as his or her own. He intentionally erected a barrier
around the operational units which he called "the Chinese Wall" to keep out
