Identify the ethical issue/problem

As an HR manager, what decisions would you make in this case? Who might be affected by the decisions made?

Are there any possible alternative actions? What are they?

What is the final course of action?

Scenario: Susie was recently hired to work as a receptionist at XYZ company. As a receptionist, she is responsible for making copies for the people in several offices. One day, her son Jon comes to her job and tells her he needs some copies for his school project. He is in a bind. Jon brought his own paper and tells her he needs about 350 copies for his class. If he does not bring the copies to class, he will fail his final project.

All employees have been warned that the equipment at work is ONLY for business use and MUST have written approval from management for any personal use. Susie knows this and knows that management will probably NOT approve 350 personal copies.

The copier does not require a security key nor does the company keep track of copies made by departments. Even though the company does not keep track of copies made, the printer does log amounts of copies for each job because the toner used is on automatic replenishment. Susie decides to make the copies for her son...especially since he has brought his own paper. While in the middle of printing, she is called away from her desk, and in her absence, the HR manager walks into her office. He sees the printing in progress and checks to see what department it is for so he could take it to that department...since Susie was doing something else. To his amazement, he finds it is Susie's personal work and notices the number of copies. He is floored and has requested a conversation with Susie...
