Recognizing Priorities

The most important thing in the workplace is getting the job done. If this fails, everyone is our of a job anyway. People who fight against change sometimes fail to appreciate this. What seems unnecessary to them is often doen to enable a business to survive or move forward. Sometimes there will have to be a complete restructure or the business goes under.

It helps if you work in an organization or large firm to recognize that the most successful way of accomplishing things is to drop the "them and us" attitude and to see yourselves a s part of a complete unit. You need each other to make things work. You also, in many cases, need the investors, so if a large proportion of the profits goes in their direction, it helps to bear in mind that without their investment, there wouldn't be a job.

It is important to recognize that people's beliefs differ. This doesn't necessarily mean that one is wrong and the other right -- they are very different. We may have different beliefs from our colleagues, or staff, but that should not prevent a joint effort from succeeding when our objectives are the same.

Where people's personalities differ it is not possible to change them, so learning to work with them is the only way. Seeing things differently at times may turn out to be a real bonus.

Fix your mind on the goal, remember why you are working and if you are unfulfilled, try talking to someone who may be able to help. Perhaps you need more responsibility, flexibility, or a new challenge.

If you do not like your job, you have 3 choices; leave, change your attitude, or accept you don't like it and focus on the advantages: perhaps it's close to home and does not involve long journeys; or it enables you to finish when the children get out of school; or the money is good.
