Objective : Students will be able to write a five-sentence paragraph responding to a given writing prompt about a nonfiction reading passage, using the RACE formula (Restate, Answer, Cite Evidence, Explain) they will demonstrate complete sentences using accurate subject, verb, capitalization and punctuation.
Model the RACE formula using a familiar text or a short excerpt from the reading passage.
Brief discussion on the Text Features of the nonfiction book and the clues they offer to help students to make predictions.
Teacher will direct the students to the passage and read it aloud to them.
Teacher will draw a Venn Diagram on the white board to record student's responses for their Accountable Talk, "What are the similarities and differences between going to school in the United States versus in Ancient Greece?"
Teacher and students will examine the responses that were given during Accountable Talk and recorded in the Venn Diagram.
Teacher will model Paragraph Writing by using the information from the Venn Diagram to guide students using the RACE formula step-by-step, think-alouds and questioning to support their understanding and develop their skill.
Teachers will also refer students to several sentence frames and anchor charts that they can choose from to scaffold writing and get students started for each step.
