Example of a single introductory paragraph: "Alexander Long's poem "Still Life with a Grain of Rice" is a better metaphorical poem than Sylvia Plath's poem "Cut" because the use of metaphors helps us develop a better imagery of the horrors of crime that happened on September 11,2001. In "Still Life with a Grain of Rice" for instance, Long uses a character from Greek mythology to mainly describe the event "Like Icarus, maybe. I used to think I'd love / To plunge like that and be done with it". (Long, 10-13) This Greek mythological character would help us better understand the point the poet is trying to make of the tragedy that happened in 2001. The use of this metaphor will help us better picture or develop a stronger use of imagery of the victims and the event. The fact that Long compared the victims to Icarus clearly would assist the readers picture the victims jumping out of the building and plunging down to their deaths. The ability to better understand the imagery the author tries to create would help the readers understand the horrors of the terrorist criminal acts that happened that day." This is an example.

1. TQR Thesis Paragraph:

• Write athesis sentencethat argues that one author uses aliterary devicebetter than another to help us understanda theme(related to crime, punishment and justice) using theplayand one other text of your choosing. The device and theme should be the same. For example, saying that Spike Lee uses close up better than O'Neill who uses dialogue doesn't make sense because O'Neill doesn't use close up when writing drama! Avoid apples and oranges situations. Spike Lee and O'Neill both use dialogue, for example, so we might use this, and decide which is better. (Simply saying they both use it, or even that they use is well, is not an argument).
• Next, make sure you include aquotationfrom one of the texts you argue, including either time (for a film), or line number (for a poem.) Use any of the texts from the first 3 units. The quotation should be very short, and can come from either text, although it usually makes sense to use the text you think is better. The quotation must be integrated into a sentence.
• Next, back up your argument and quotation with yourmap. Do not discuss the thesis or the quotation, but rather tell us the 3 points you will make in your three paragraphs.2 of the points will be the device and theme we picked for our thesis. Now we must chose one more device and place it in the logic chain (from one of the 6 options above, choose 1, 3 or 5, since for this assignment you must use 2 devices)
• The last thing is to make sure that you tell uswhyyour points are ordered the way that you have chosen. The 'why' sentences should come in between the roadmap points. Think of it this way: The points are your destinations on your map, the 'why' is your logic, and your road. Roadmaps need both destinationsandroads.
