Although Mary be highly educated she is not doing a great job of building her team together. That's what makes jobs work and more efficient is when the team is strong. Mary does a poor job with managing her team and when being a manager/ leader you have to know how to build people's confident and trust, including pulling everyone together. Mary could have utilized the forming stage by making the meetings mandatory or possibly showing up to the first meeting. As being a manager you tell people what they need to do and know also, most managers have higher expectations of adults and taking responsibility.

Mary could use Lencioni's ideas of "conflict" and take more charge of her team and how to build it better. I do believe that Joe is feeling resentful towards the team and his job but he as well can take charge, although he has talked to some of the other employees. Joe could even talk to another employee and have them talk to everyone. Mary could be a little more organized and keep up with her team.

Mary could be a better manager by being more involved and setting clear goals and expectations. For an example Joe feeling insecure and resentful Mary should make sure that her employees are always engaged. Even by letting the employees know that they are doing a good job could go a very long way for some. Mary is higher up but not the boss, I think her first priority should be making good relationships with the employees as well as bringing them closer to each other.
