Gravity is a mysterious force in the realm of science and everyday life. It is something experienced by everyone in day to day life, yet there is so much that we still do not know or understand about this force. To this day, we are still not entirely sure where gravity comes from, or what it is, but we do know that it is an interaction of the mass of objects and energy, and it forces objects to attract each other. The first scientific study of gravity began with Isaac Newton, where he came up with the law of universal gravitation-gravity is a universal force acting between all masses (Science News Today, 2025). He concluded that any two objects in the universe exert a force of attraction on each other in direct proportion to the object's masses and the distance between them, meaning that the larger the mass of the objects and the shorter the distance between them, the stronger the pull of gravitational forces on them (Science News Today, 2025).
Later, however, Albert Einstein came up with the Theory of Relativity. The theory of Relativity concludes that gravity is not just a force, but an actual curvature in the space-time continuum. The idea behind this is that the mass that an object has actually causes the space around it to bend and curve. This means that any body that is caught in another body's gravity is affected because the space it is moving through is curved through that object (Atkinson, 2025). This is really interesting to think about because it makes sense that an object with a larger mass would curve the space more and the gravitational pull would be stronger on the smaller objects that are closer to it. The energy of gravity does not necessarily emerge from anywhere, but is an interaction of the naturally occurring mass and space-time continuum.
With the understanding of gravity today, there is no gravitational repulsion. There are different theories that point to gravitational repulsion in the expansion of the universe and dark matter theories but there is currently no evidence to support it. Gravity is understood currently to be an attractive force that is always pulling objects together.
