The Democratic Party and other social democrats have placed a strong emphasis on the idea of equality. They see the role of government as a regulator to ensure fairness in economics and social order, and they use regulatory powers such as taxation and antidiscrimination laws in order to achieve this. Democrats value positive liberty, or the belief that government should intervene for utilitarian gains (T1B L2, min 4). The Republican Party, on the other hand, prefers maintaining social tradition and values individuality more than collectivism and sees the role of government as being there to maintain a moral order in society. They traditionally reject government in economics and are stronger proponents of laissez faire economics (T1B L2, min 6). When looking at the classical and modern dilemmas, it's important to note the difference in values between the two parties in the modern context, as the last few decades have seen a dramatic spreading of the parties' ideologies. As parties spread, voting habits will be forced to follow as fewer moderate candidates are ticketed by parties. Today, both parties are reshaping themselves in drastic ways. As an economics major, I am very curious to see how the current administration's global economic policies will shake out, how both Republican and Democratic voters will be affected, and how the Democratic Party will respond.
