reply to this discussion: Diversity is a concept that has a vast influence in the workplace. It encompasses and highlights the importance of accepting and respecting individual differences while focusing on achieving the same goal. Diversity management is a complicated concept that is not easy to implement in the workplace. Diversity management is not merely a compliance issue but a strategic implementation that can contribute to overall company effectiveness (Nelson & Quick, 2019, p.27).
The United States is one of the most established diversity concepts that has contributed to the success of many companies. Promoting equal opportunity and preventing discrimination in the workplace are the core policies supported by legislative acts such as the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) laws (DOL, n.d.). Many major companies also have programs that focus on diversity training. Inclusion is where companies are trying to make the workplace where employees are valued and emerge in the company culture.
In contrast, Vietnams view of diversity vastly differs from the U.S. Even with 53 recognized ethnic minority groups, the Kinh ethnic groups dominated the majority of the population of Vietnam (Open Development Vietnam, 2020). Therefore, diversity in the workplace is much less prevalent than in the U.S. Vietnam emphasizes harmony and respect for hierarchy, which significantly impact workplace dynamics and can be challenging for companies to try to align diversity in Vietnam with global standards.
I have observed the culture of working in both the U.S. and Vietnam. The U.S. companies emphasize diversity and provide various resources with an open discussion on race, gender, and equality rights. However, diversity talk in companies in Vietnam can be more subdued due to the stronger emphasis on team building and the respect for hierarchical structures within any company. For example, U.S. companies can more openly share diverse viewpoints and encourage everyone to speak their opinions. In contrast, Vietnamese employees can be more reserved to maintain harmony and avoid conflict while working together.
