This week we are discussing the discoveries of Sir Isaac Newton and his expansion upon the ideas of Coppernicus, Kepler, and Galileo, as well as some of the disagreements he had with other scientists of the time.

One of the major controversies regarding possible plagiarism from Newton is the invention of infinitesimal calculus. While Isaac Barrow was the first to create calculus as a working function, both Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz are accredited with their profound expansions of Barrow's work. In the late 1670s, Leibniz made claims that Newton's findings were plagiarised from his works. Historians have proved that both men found differential calculus independently of each other, though Newton was the first to work on it because Leibniz would have been too young to have published mathematics at the time that Newton began to publish.

Newton's work in calculus was not the only one to have been accused of plagiarism. His findings in optics and planetary motion were allegedly shared by fellow scientist Robert Hooke. Hooke and Newton fervently disagreed about the behavior of light, Hooke claiming it acted as a wave, and Newton convinced it was made of particles. Later Newton published the Principia, in which planetary motion from Hooke's suggestion of using an inverse square law, is published. While both men are attributed to the expansion of Galileo's and Coppernicus' heliocentric model, Newton's Principia on the subject was published before Hooke's findings.

Many scientific discoveries are credited to Isaac Newton, as he was a scientist in the field of optics, color, astrophysics, and chemistry. Most notably, his study of the force of gravity and the Laws of Motion revolutionized science for years to come.
