Scott Thompson was the newly appointed CEO for Yahoo Inc. To everyone's knowledge, he was qualified for the job and had the resume to back those qualifications. However, Thompson was dishonest in the education he held to be equipped for this position. Thompson stated in his resume he used at Yahoo Inc., as well as other companies he was also the CEO for, that he held a degree in computer science. This, of course, was a lie and Thompson had no formal education in computer science and did not hold a degree from any institution in the study. He did, however, hold a degree in accounting from a college in Massachusetts. The major issue at hand is just as the article states, Scott Thompson is only one of many high-power individuals who have falsified their credentials for the positions they hold (Stewart, J.). According to our text, intelligence and conscientiousness are two task-orientation traits. As far as intelligergec, while Thompson had intelligence, his knowledge and expertise was not in the field in which he claimed it to be. In addition, Thompson did not display the task-orientation trait of conscientiousness. He knew lying was wrong and that many employees who worked under him relied on his knowledge and expertise. What Thompson displayed is what Kinicki describes as nareissism. Thompson felt he was equipped for the job, regardless of what the qualifications required. He also put his own needs over the needs of the group, the entirety of Yahoo (Kinicki, A.). According to Business Insider, eBay and Paypal produced a fake document proving his educational background in computer science. He claims he did not look at the document enough to understand what it was. He also claimed he did not review any further documents from Yahoo created about his credentials where he should bave. Although Thompson could have potentially been a good leader, he proved to be intrinsically unethical from the beginning, as well as the firms who hired him, according to Thompson's allegations (Carlson, N.). Thompson could have avoided this scandal by being honest from the beginning, or even applying for positions in accounting, as he had a degree in this field. There were many alternative solutions for Thompson, yet he displayed nareissism and irrational thinking. Clearly Thompson had little ethical awareness or standards in his decision-making. While he himself believed he was equipped for the position, he knew he had no formal education to be qualified for the positions he was awarded. Scott Thompson could have been the greatest leader, who possessed all qualities a good leader. Unfortunately, he displayed unethical methods in obtaining his titles, making his qualities irrelevant. - Review other students' posts before deciding what and where to structure reply posts.
