Research the software you selected and report your findings.
Important Note: Select this option if you are not able to install software on the system you are using. If you do not have administrative rights on the Unix or Linux machine that you are using, this is the option for you.
Research a freely available software package for Unix or Linux that was included with your distribution and is already installed. For NetLab users, select a a desktop distribution of Linux if you wish to use software that is run on X Window. For example, select NISGTC Linux+ Series 2 Lab 01 Configuring X Window to select either a Fedora or Ubuntu desktop distribution.
Once you have selected the open source software you would like to report on, collect information about it. You should be able to find everything you need on the Internet. Gather your information from at least two of the following categories:
* news articles
* blogs
* User Group bulletin boards
* Software Reviews
* Promotion pages
You must report your findings on your research. Make sure to include the following information at a minimum.
1. What is the name of the software?
2. Where is the software available? Provide the url
3. Does the software have a graphical user interface or command-line only?
4. What does the software do? Is it similar to commercially available software? If so, which one?
5. What are the pros and cons of using this software? What do users like and dislike about it? (Blog posts and user reviews are the best source for this question).
6. Is adequate documentation provided (online or as part of the download) to help someone get started? Provide the url(s).
7. Describe what you did with the software and the results. Provide output file or screen shots.
8. Were you happy with the software? Would you recommend it to others?
Deliverables:
Turn in ONE of the following. --Written research report (between 2 and 5 pages) on your finding
