Researching and Reporting Assingment

Introduction:

This learning activity is designed to provide you with some practice around determining which statements in your report require in-text references and reference formats.

Instructions:

The excerpt below is from a sample report with some references, but it requires 3 tasks to be completed. Insert into the exerpt the relevant citations and add a new reference to the existing References list. Use the MLA style guide when compiling this submission.

Section A:

1. There are three references to external sources in the following report excerpt. The sources are from different mediums, listed under the References in the following order: 1) periodical 2) Internet, and 3) book.

Identify which statements in the excerpt below require an intext citation of a source and indicate how you would denote the source using a intext citation (it doesn't really matter if you identify the "appropriate" reference to go with the citation; what I am looking for is that you are able to identify which passage requires a citation).

Section B:

The report excerpt also makes reference to three items of research generated by the report writer for this report:

A.) a survey of students related to getting a part-time job (which would be contained in Appendix A of the report);

B.) a survey of computer businesses and their owners (which would be contained in Appendix B of the report); and

C.) an interview with the program administrator for the Computer Programming department.

2. Indicate how the two surveys contained in the Appendices of the report would be denoted in the text of the excerpt.

3. Add to the "reference section" a citation for the interview (use the name Sarah Lockhart and provide the other details as necessary).

Excerpt

Students of the Computer Programming at Jones College have a hard time getting part-time jobs within computer stores. I feel that if students were able to secure a part-time job while in college, they would be more likely to find full-time employment upon graduation. People who have part-time jobs in college have a better chance of getting that first job. I wanted to determine if the problem is related to the lack of opportunity within the community or the lack of desire or skills students have to get or perform in these positions. My research determined that there is a lower-than-average number of computer-related businesses in this town. As well I administered two surveys: one with the student population, which showed that most students are motivated to get part-time jobs; and I surveyed business owners, which indicated that students had on average 80% of the required skills required by these business owners. I conducted an interview with the program administrator for the Computer Programming department who indicated that her office has found that students who are employed part-time while going to school are more likely to get full-time work after graduation.
