The master schedule shows the number of employees needed for each position and the total number of hours each one will be scheduled to work. It has two purposes: (1) it helps ensure the correct number of waged employees will be available for each position to ensure the best service for customers, and (2) it helps plan waged labor expenses to meet budget goals.

The master schedule is a very important tool that should be utilized by managers. It is essentially a planning tool created to help guide the manager later on when developing the actual crew schedule, which includes more detail about who exactly is scheduled and gets distributed to employees. In a way it is sort of like a rough draft. The master schedule just helps managers lay out the basics about how many people are needed for a particular shift and how much it is likely to cost. It serves to make sure enough staff members will be working to get satisfactory food out properly and in a reasonable amount of time, while also preventing going over the labor budget by scheduling too many people.

MASTER SCHEDULE

A master schedule is very important, and it is the estimate of the combination of three essential elements:

Amount of hours budgeted for a certain period of time

Business needs according to occupancy, and

Number of employees available.

This serves as a guide for the Manager to make the department week schedule, making sure there are enough employees scheduled for each shift and each position according to the establishment needs to be able to provide an excellent service to the guests in the hotel, or in the restaurant, and still being profitable.

The two main purposes of a master schedule are:

1) It helps ensure the correct number of waged employees in each position will be available for an excellent service.

2) It helps in planning waged labor expenses to meet budget goals.
