In order to respond to the Indigenous communities' needs for health supports and services, the federal government and the Indigenous population have entered into devolution. This new relationship is a result of a movement to transfer administrative control of social services from government agencies to Indigenous communities. An example of an Indigenous agency and movement that has gained control over their own health would be the First Nations Health Authority (Laurentian University, 2023, Module 8). The First Nations Health Authority provides British Colombia's Indigenous population with many different social supports, ranging from culturally safe and trauma-informed services to virtual doctors, and counselling services. One support that the First Nations Health Authority offers is the 24-hour crisis lines. As we are all aware today, most individuals have access to a telephone or cell phone. Having supports readily available at any time is very important and essential in order to obtain and maintain health and wellness within Indigenous communities (First Nations Health Authority, 2023). The crisis lines available through the First Nations Health Authority are as follows:
- "Hope for Wellness Help Line offers immediate mental health counselling and crisis intervention by phone or online chat. Call toll-free 1-855-242-3310 or start a confidential chat with a counsellor at hopeforwellness.ca
- Indian Residential School Crisis Line is a national service for anyone experiencing pain or distress as a result of their residential school experience. Call toll-free 1-866-925-4419.
- Kuu-Us Crisis Line Society provides crisis services for Indigenous people across BC. Adults/Elders line 250-723-4050; youth line 250-723-2040. Or call toll free 1-800-8717.
- Métis Crisis Line is a service of Métis Nation British Columbia. Call 1-833-MétisBC (1-833-638-4722)" (First Nations Health Authority, 2023).
Social work conducted in Indigenous communities are now using both generic and community-specific methodologies. The most common approaches are defined through a holistic viewpoint that links environmental interdependency and macroAn analytic frameworks to obtain harmony and balance between both systems (Laurentian University, 2023, Module 8). I believe it is very important that Indigenous communities can take control of their health to obtain healing and wellness within their communities as well as aid in the process of decolonization through the act of self-governance.
