This analysis is focused on the U.S. automobile industry using Porters five forces model. The U.S. automobile industry contributes significantly to the U.S. GDP and employment of many Americans. In 2009, the U.S. economic recession severely impacted this industry and forced the Big 3 automakers, Chrysler, GM and Ford into bankruptcy or economic uncertainty. The U.S. government provided a bailout for Chrysler and GM, while Ford used alternative ways to survive. The failure of the Big 3 would have impacted the American economy and devastated the states of Ohio and Michigan, where their manufacturing facilities are located. Using Porters five forces analysis tool, this economic recession constituted a reassessment of the marketplace. This analysis of the auto industry will be used to measure their competition and profitability which led to their restructuring and future success.
