The All Important Pitch Letter

The Pitch Letter is one of the most critical tools in PR. You may have a weak press release, but if you have a great pitch letter an editor may buy your news story, that is, your press release.

Often, the Pitch Letter is the only tool a PR professional uses to sell a story idea. There may be no news or press release, so a creative PR person just comes up with ideas and crafts them into intelligent pitches or e-mails (not too long a few paragraphs) that titillate an editors or reporters imagination. We say editor or reporter because often the section or department editor is responsible for handing out stories to the reporters, as well as the reporters coming up with their own story ideas that they in turn pitch their editors on in their daily story meetings. So, in effect, you can send a pitch to either an editor or a reporter.

The best pitch letters bring the story to life. It will tell a tale of suffering or success or triumph over adversity. It talks about real breakthroughs in products, services, or technology. It will use names of real people who got real results. It will tell the reporter that interviews can be set up with these people immediately. There are photographs or illustrations, too. A pitch letter is serious, but engaging. It can be conversational, but not overly so. Writing effective pitch letters is a real art and it takes thinking, writing, and nuanced sales skills to create effective ones. Reporters can smell a beginner from the first word, but they appreciate someone that really understands what kind of stories they are looking for.

There is full scale manufacturing of the robot was under way at the companys Raleigh, N.C. plant and will be available in consumer electronics retail outlets throughout the U.S. in the following year. The robot will command a prospective retail price of $9,200 with a launch of about 8,000 robots.

The technology that powers and operates the robot was obtained in an exclusive license, from Dell Computer Corporation, which retains the right to market the robot as a computer operator.
