Running head: MODULE 9 - PROJECT: T-TEST PROJECT SUBMITTAL Module 9 - Project: t-Test Project Submittal EMBRY-RIDDLE AERONAUTICAL UNIVERSITY Statistics with Aviation Applications MATH 211 1 MODULE 9 - PROJECT: T-TEST PROJECT SUBMITTAL 2 Module 9 - Project: t-Test Project Submittal T-Test Project This T-Test project is to research if there is a cost difference for paperback books between two major online book sellers, amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com. I chose 50 titles and compared the prices between the two online dealers. Based off personal shopping experience and initial data colleting I expect Amazon.com to have lower prices for paperback books than Barnesandnoble.com. Population I selected 50 paperback book titles that both Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com sell on their websites. Variables and Data Collection I collected the data for all 50 paperback titles from www.Amazon.com and www.barnesandnoble.com. I started by finding titles by looking at the New York Times best sellers list that was listed on Amazon.com, then went to popular titles, and then whet to award winning titles to get a total of 50 paperback book titles. While doing this I also recorded the price for the title as well. After I made the first list based off of Amazon.com I then went to Barnesandnoble.com, and recorded the prices they listed. As I was doing the price collecting I realized that Barnesandnoble.com didn't have a few of the titles in paperback so to keep the integrity of the data I had to find alternate titles. MODULE 9 - PROJECT: T-TEST PROJECT SUBMITTAL 3 Statistical Test and Hypothesis Statement I will be using StatCrunch to perform a two sample T-Test to analyze the data I collected. The null hypothesis is that Amazon.com = Barnesandnoble.com and the alternate hypothesis is that Amazon.com < Barnesandnoble.com. (H0: 1 = 2 , HA: 1 < 2)Results Descriptive statistics I believe the conditions for a confidence interval and hypothesis test are met because the sample sizes are evenly distributed. 95% confidence interval results: Two sample T confidence interval: 1 : Mean of Amazon.com 2 : Mean of BarnesandNoble.com 1 - 2 : Difference between two means (without pooled variances) DifferenceSample Diff. Std. Err. DF L. Limit U. Limit 1 - 2 -0.78780.3298966990.742564-1.4431243-0.1324757 Hypothesis test results: Two sample T hypothesis test: 1 : Mean of Amazon.com 2 : Mean of BarnesandNoble.com 1 - 2 : Difference between two means H0 : 1 - 2 = 0 HA : 1 - 2 < 0 (without pooled variances) DifferenceSample Diff. Std. Err. DF T-Stat P-value 1 - 2 -0.78780.3298966990.742564-2.3880203 0.0095 MODULE 9 - PROJECT: T-TEST PROJECT SUBMITTAL 4 Results: Using the 95% confidence interval, the lower limit is -1.443 and the upper limit of -0.132 with a standard error or 0.330 and a sample difference of -0788. The hypothesis results resulted in a test statistic of -2.3880. The degree of freedom is 90.743 and the p-value is 0.0095. Conclusion: Based on the researched data, the p value is 0.0095, is significantly less than 0.05. This tells me that it supports the alternate hypothesis and the null hypothesis can be rejected. The 95% confidence, the mean between Amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com is between (-1.443, -0.132). This interval concludes that my alternate hypothesis that Amazon.com has lower paperback book prices than barnesandnoble.com is true. Discussion: After going over the results of both tests, based off the p value and other information produced from StatCrunch this supports that the alternate hypothesis that Amazon.com has lower paperback book prices than barnesandnoble.com is true.
